GRACIE JIU JITSU

Black Lion Academy is the only school in west Michigan that teaches traditional Gracei Jiu Jitsu. GJJ is more focused on Self Defense than competition Jiu Jitsu. We also offer classes in competition side of the art which is our Adult Advanced classes for someone who is looking to compete.

jiu jitsu for self defense

The Self-Defense class revolves around Kroyler Gracie's self-defense program. This classes is less intense and is designed for anyone looking to learn Jiu Jitsu without the atmosphere of the competition focused training.

Competition is vital to understanding, learning, and honing one's skills. Techniques and strategies, as well as takedowns, attacks, throws, ground positions, and escapes are taught uniformed in either Gi or Kimono. Exploring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as sport is an engaging way for students to learn without having a distinct interest in fighting. Safe rules are followed and weight classes are used for men, women, and children.

In addition, training without the uniform is taught so the student does not rely on the uniform for control. Though it may appear to be wrestling, training without the uniform is aimed at finishing the opponent with submission holds, not pinning.

NoGI jiu jitsu

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is faster-paced, grappling without the traditional uniform where the primary objective is to take your opponent’s back without grabbing the opponent’s clothing. Guillotines and brabo chokes are used more often as a result, as well as utilizing foot and leg locks. Gripping the neck and joints to control the opponent takes more of a wrestling-based approach, so wrist grabs, collar ties, and joint controls are common. No-Gi has limited submissions and it is often referred to as being technically superior to other forms without the ability to use the opponent’s Gi or clothing as leverage.

jiu jitsu for Law Enforcement

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become the standard at police academies, as it has proven to be one of the most effective tools within law enforcement and centers around disarming and disengaging rather than combative brawling. When subduing or making an arrest, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives the officer comfortability and control over the suspect or criminal without having to default to his or her weapon. When a confrontation ends up on the ground, Jiu Jitsu allows the officer to immobilize and detain the suspect.
